MBPJ Opens FIFA World Cup 2026 Screening Permits for PJ Businesses
Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) announced on 6 July 2026 that businesses in Petaling Jaya wanting to screen FIFA World Cup 2026 matches for customers or the public must apply for a Sementara Tred Permit through the e-Lesen MBPJ portal. The announcement matters for any mamak stall, restaurant, hotel, pub, convention centre or community hall in PJ that plans to put a screen up during the tournament. Screening without the permit is unlicensed and falls under MBPJ's enforcement.
Two permit categories, and which one applies
MBPJ splits applications into two categories. Category A (Premis Terbuka) covers open-air screenings accessible to the public: mamak restaurants, open-air food courts, open medan selera, open fields and similar locations. Category B (Premis Tertutup) covers enclosed venues with controlled entry: hotels, free-standing buildings, halls, convention centres and similar closed premises. The category you apply under depends on the physical setup of your venue, not the type of business.
All screenings must be conducted "secara sah, teratur dan mematuhi syarat-syarat" (lawfully, in an orderly manner and in compliance with MBPJ's conditions). The conditions cover public safety, public order, and the wellbeing of the local community, which in practice means crowd control, noise, parking, and fire safety. The permit is temporary, valid only for the duration of the World Cup 2026 tournament.
How to apply, and who to call
Applications go through the e-Lesen MBPJ online portal, not over the counter. The licensing department handling these permits is the Jabatan Pelesenan Pembangunan Perniagaan dan Usahawan (Licensing, Business Development and Entrepreneurship Department). For enquiries, the department has published a single contact number: 013-9410146, staffed Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 5.00pm. The department can advise on documentation requirements, fees, and processing time before you submit.
For business owners in PJ, the practical question is timing. World Cup 2026 runs across June and July, with the final in mid-July. The MBPJ announcement came out on 6 July, which means applications filed now will be processed during the final stages of the tournament. If you are planning to screen the final or any of the remaining knockout matches, file the e-Lesen application as soon as possible. Late applications risk missing the matches entirely if processing takes more than a few days.
